He arched an eyebrow. “Pyotr is not investing. I am.” He gave a shrug. “He has found dealing with U.S. businesses…problematic. He’s turning his attention to Africa.”

“Are you going to Africa?” I asked, wondering if I’d somehow misread our…interactions. Would he invest then leave?

“Pyotr is releasing me from my…contract. What I invest will be unentangled from his...problems.”

“So, you’re on your own?”

“I am.”

I locked gazes with him. “You’re planning on staying? In New York?”

“In New York…” He made a face. “My permanent visa is processing. I hope there will be no issues.”

“And if there are…” I drew a deep breath. “I might be able to help you with that.”

He arched a brow. “You have friends who can push along an application?”

“No, but there are ways around the wait.”

“Ah… You mean…marriage.”

“You said you wanted my shares.”

His eyes narrowed, but a smile played on his lips.

“Well, Fedorr,” I said, lowering my voice to imitate him, “I want yourrs, too.”
